Ferrous Ascorbate

Ferrous ascorbate is a chelated complex of ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) and ascorbic acid (vitamin C). It appears as a reddish-brown powder, soluble in water, and is used in oral iron preparations. The ascorbic acid component enhances iron absorption and stabilizes the ferrous state.

Chemical Name and CAS Registry Number: Iron(II) ascorbate [24808-52-4]

Functional Category: Iron supplement; hematinic

Pharmacopeial Specifications:

  • Iron Content: 15–25%

  • Ascorbic Acid Content: 35–45%

  • Identification: Positive for iron and ascorbate

  • Loss on Drying: ≀5%

  • pH (1% solution): 3.0–5.0

  • Microbial Limits: Complies with pharmacopeial requirements

Applications in Pharmaceutical Formulation:

Commonly used in oral iron supplements such as tablets and syrups to treat iron deficiency anemia. Ascorbic acid improves the bioavailability of iron and prevents its oxidation.

Comments:

Ferrous ascorbate combines high iron bioavailability with the antioxidant benefits of vitamin C. It is more stable than traditional iron salts in solution and exhibits fewer oxidative interactions with excipients in formulation.
