Calcium L-5 Methytetrahydrolfolate

Calcium L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate is the calcium salt form of the biologically active isomer of folate (vitamin B9). It appears as a yellowish to off-white crystalline powder, soluble in water and more stable than folic acid under physiological conditions.

Chemical Name and CAS Registry Number: Calcium (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolate [151533-22-1]

Functional Category: Nutrient supplement; source of folate

Pharmacopeial Specifications:

  • Identification: IR or HPLC

  • Assay (on dry basis): 95.0–102.0%

  • Loss on Drying: ≤8.5%

  • Heavy Metals: ≤10 ppm

  • Microbial Limits: Complies with USP/EU standards

Applications in Pharmaceutical Formulation:

Used as a folate supplement in tablets, capsules, and fortified nutritional products. Especially beneficial in populations with MTHFR enzyme polymorphisms who cannot efficiently convert folic acid to its active form.

Comments:

Calcium L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate offers superior bioavailability and avoids metabolic conversion required by folic acid. It is used in prenatal vitamins, metabolic therapies, and folate-deficiency treatments.
