Corn Starch

Corn starch is a white, odorless, tasteless powder obtained from the endosperm of corn kernels. It exhibits good swelling properties and moderate solubility in cold water.

Chemical Name and CAS Registry Number: Maize starch [9005-25-8]

Functional Category: Disintegrant; diluent; binder

Pharmacopeial Specifications:

  • Identification: Positive for starch
  • pH (10% dispersion): 4.0–7.0
  • Loss on Drying: ≤15%
  • Residue on Ignition: ≤0.5%
  • Microbial Limits: Meets pharmacopeial standards

Applications in Pharmaceutical Formulation:

Used in tablet formulations as a filler, disintegrant (5-10%), and dry binder (2-5%). Also used in granulation processes to enhance compressibility.

Comments:

Corn starch is widely available and cost-effective. It enhances flowability and reduces tablet capping issues in direct compression formulations.
