Pregelatinized Starch

Pregelatinized starch is a white or off-white, odorless powder produced by hydrothermally processing native starch. It has partial solubility in cold water and forms a gel upon hydration.

Chemical Name and CAS Registry Number: Partially hydrolyzed starch [9005-25-8]

Functional Category: Binder; disintegrant; diluent

Pharmacopeial Specifications:

  • Identification: Complies with starch tests
  • Loss on Drying: ≤14%
  • pH (10% dispersion): 4.5–7.0
  • Microbial Limits: Complies with pharmacopeial standards

Applications in Pharmaceutical Formulation:

Used as a multifunctional excipient in tablet and capsule formulations. Functions as a binder, filler, and disintegrant at concentrations of 5-15%.

Comments:

Pregelatinized starch improves tablet binding while maintaining disintegration properties. It enhances the mechanical strength of tablets and reduces friability.
