Cellulose Powder

Powdered cellulose is a white or nearly white, odorless, and tasteless powder available in various particle sizes. It ranges from a free-flowing fine or granular dense powder to a coarse, fluffy, and non-flowing material. Due to its versatility, it is widely used in pharmaceutical, food, and industrial applications as a bulking agent, stabilizer, and texture enhancer. It improves flow properties, compressibility, and uniformity in tablet formulations and serves as a dietary fiber source and controlled-release agent in pharmaceuticals.

Chemical Name and CAS Registry Number :- Cellulose [9004-34-6]
Functional Category :-Adsorbent; glidant; suspending agent; tablet and capsule diluent; tablet disintegrant.

Applications in Pharmaceutical Formulation

Powdered cellulose is used as a tablet diluent, capsule filler, and suspending agent. It provides bulk, aids compression, and reduces sedimentation in soft gelatin capsules, aqueous suspensions, and suppositories. Low-crystallinity variants improve direct compression.

Comments

Powdered cellulose is listed in the Food Chemicals Codex (FCC) and has the EINECS number 232-674-9.
